Six Ways to Achieve Better Behaviour at the Office

Working with family is not always easy. You have history. You know a lot about one another. You know how to push each other’s buttons. Feelings can be strong – you may love each other or hate each other (or some of both). This kind of dynamic is unique to those families who work together in a family business.  Many families navigate the challenges well.  With planning and a positive attitude so can you.

Below are six suggestions to help you achieve harmony in the family business workplace.

  1. This too shall pass

    • Take a long-term approach

    • Ask yourself if in a year this will matter

      •  If it will matter address it sooner than later (smaller problems are easier to fix than bigger problems)

    • Walk away if needed

  2. Recognize that family dynamics are complicated

    • Dealing with family can be hard

    • Resentments can rear-up and lead to outbursts

    • Don’t expect overnight change, resolution takes time

  3. Create a Code of Conduct

    • Be clear about behavioural expectations at the office

    • Some examples include:

      • Leave your feelings outside the office

      • Act professionally

      • Treat others with respect

      • Listen with the intent to understand

      • Rules for conflict resolution

  4. Manage yourself

    • Control what you can

    • Lead by example

    • In this way you will build trust

    • Take time off to relax and regroup

  5. Have respectful conversations

    • Discuss issues and listen to understand

    • Try to put yourselves in their shoes

    • If something can’t be resolved get help

  6. Have a family retreat

    • Take time in a non-stressful environment to celebrate successes and make connections

    • Plan far in advance to everyone has notice and feels welcome

    • Keep it as simple and easy as you can for everyone to make it

    • Ask for input

    • Plan for some team building activities and some less scheduled fun
